How are your mind reading skills?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your leader cannot read your mind. When you become a people leader you aren’t bestowed with this magical skill.

We all have preferences about how we like to communicate and be communicated with. As well as if we are planners or are fine going with the flow. My point is … if you know what will help you thrive – then let your leader know.

Asking for what you need

A leadership coaching client was unclear on their role and performance goals, after significant changes to the business over the past 12 months. They spoke to their leader and agreed to set SMART goals as a guide.

A client started a new role and didn’t have a regular one-on-one meeting with their leader. Their communication preference was to receive regular feedback via meetings. They had a short coffee meeting with their leader, sharing what works for them and agreed to fortnightly meetings.

Do you have a career development plan?

Some people are happy to not have a structured plan, while others need clarity to thrive. If you’re a leader, it's a pivotal responsibility to know your team members aspirations then coach them to identify the skills they need.

If you’re an individual contributor, you don't need to wait for a formal company process to develop a written career development plan. You can start the conversation this week.

“Daring greatly means the courage to be vulnerable. It means to show up and be seen. To ask for what you need. To talk about how you’re feeling. To have the hard conversations.”
Brené Brown, Dare to Lead.
